This talk will explore the current landscape and future direction of battery storage technologies. It will cover dominant chemistries such as lithium-ion and lead-acid, their performance limitations, and the role of materials engineering in improving efficiency, life cycle, and cost. The session will also highlight emerging technologies including solid-state batteries, sodium-ion systems, and next-generation materials. Finally, it will connect battery innovation to real-world applications such as renewable energy integration, electric mobility outlining key challenges and opportunities in scaling indigenous sustainable energy storage solutions.
Brief Biodata
Amitej Rao is a chemical engineer and energy storage researcher with over four years of experience at the intersection of materials science, electrochemical systems, and sustainable energy technologies. His work focuses on developing advanced battery materials, optimizing electrode performance, and scaling innovations from laboratory research to industrial production. As a founding member at Cancrie, he has led the development of Agri waste-derived nanocarbon materials for next-generation batteries, contributing to improved performance and sustainability. He is a co-inventor on multiple patents and has published research in the field of battery manufacturing and optimization.
Amitej has also worked with leading organizations such as Deepak Fertilizers, Reliance and Henkel, where he contributed to process optimization and energy efficiency projects. His work has been recognized through national and international research grants, including support from the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), and he is a recipient of the National Energy Efficiency Innovation Award by the Government of India. He holds a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering degree from Institute of Chemical Technology,(UDCT) Mumbai and a Masters in Sustainable Energy Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur.
