Since its emergence through reverse osmosis (RO) in the 1960s, membrane technology has become a cornerstone of modern society. Advances in membrane materials, fabrication, and process engineering have made it indispensable across diverse applications—from life-saving blood dialysis and clean water production to gas separation, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food processing, energy, materials, and environmental protection.

Despite India's impressive achievements in semiconductor, robotics, defense, advanced materials, etc., indigenous membrane S&T has received feeble attention. This presentation will cover opportunities, challenges, and discuss how strengthening indigenous membrane capabilities can contribute better to India's industrial competitiveness.
